An Affair with the Moon

I’ve read five of David Gilmour‘s eight novels, and he tends to write a lot of the same; So much so that, when reading his work, I often feel like I’ve read entire paragraphs before, and I know the back stories of many of his characters before they’re even properly introduced. And, of course, I know there has to be requisite trips to UCC, the University of Toronto, and Jamaica. Though An Affair with the Moon follows in this vein, I  did find it refreshing to read a love story by Gilmour between two male friends, rather than constantly having to deal with Gilmour and his unfiltered reverence of women and sex. The author often goes out of his way to reference that his novel is in Toronto, but in a very roundabout way that’s simultaneously 1) difficult for the non-Torontonian to situate themselves within an environment, and 2) illogical and frustrating for those who do live here. For example, Gilmour’s protagonist walks up a block from Yorkville and finds himself in Chinatown? An Affair with the Moon is good, but I’d recommend Gilmour’s Sparrow Nights over it in a heartbeat. Also, don’t read The Perfect Order of Things prior to Affair, or you’ll know the “punchline,” so to speak. [Book 4/50]
